Job Description

We’re looking for a Head of Product to join this specialist software company on a maternity cover contract. You’ll be an experienced product professional, with great leadership skills, a collaborative approach and a curious nature. This is a highly flexible role in a supportive and friendly team.

The Role

This is a key role in the business and will give you the opportunity to work with an experienced and committed team of leaders driving the success of their highly regarded software product. To provide the support, expertise and guidance needed during 12+ months of maternity cover by leading the team on the right path to sustained success. This encompasses a wide range of disciplines including product development, sales and marketing, customer success and infrastructure.

Leadership and strategy:

  • Ensure the continued delivery of the current year’s strategy, evolving the details as required. Work with the team to develop an updated strategy taking them into the next financial year (November 1st 2024). Lead and support the team in delivery of this e.g. through OKRs (objectives and key results).
  • Be accountable for the team’s performance at a company level, including ongoing management of budgets, completion of objectives and KPIs.
  • Inspire and motivate the team, supporting the continued development of their great culture with a few focuses: Celebrate success, encourage open feedback so that team members feel supported yet challenged to grow and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Feeding back up to the senior management, including tensions/improvements to the company vision, budget or other product strategies.
  • Lead the budget creation for the next financial year (starting November 1st), balancing company profit and investment goals with team needs.

Team Development:

  • Providing facilitative leadership that allows freedom and autonomy yet provides guidance when needed.
  • Be the point of support and escalation for issues faced by the team and hold the knowledge / resources to effectively solve escalated problems.
  • Identify and remove roadblocks for the team.
  • Fostering understanding and ownership of the product strategy across the roles and teams.
  • Traditional “line manager” responsibilities including running 121s, providing feedback and dealing with performance challenges.

Current Strategic Impact:

  • Support the Customer Acquisition Team that is focused on developing strong product market fit, improving our sales and marketing effectiveness and ultimately reducing cost of acquisition.
  • Work with the Customer Success team to ensure they are driving engagement, delivering value, upselling and reducing churn.

The Person

  • Demonstrable experience of product management, ideally in a software/digital environment
  • Experience of diversifying a mature product and/or experience of a start-up product
  • Strong leadership skills and emotional intelligence
  • Able to demonstrate curiosity and be confident challenging the norm
  • Works collaboratively with team members, respects experience and knowledge in others 
  • Confident working at a strategic level
  • Experience of leading leaders and using knowledge and expertise to grow others

The Terms

  • Salary – c£80k FTE* (pro-rated down for part-time hours). Dependent on experience.
  • Minimum 30 hours per week or full-time. Open to flexilibty and hybrid working (1-2 days a week in the Brighton office which is close to the station with great views of the sea and the Downs).
  • 25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays
  • A matched pension scheme up to 4%.  This applies after the initial 3 month probation period.
