Job Description

A broad and hands-on bookkeeping role with a long-established housebuilding business.

Are you an experienced, AAT-qualified Bookkeeper looking for a role where you can take real ownership of the day-to-day finances?

This could be an excellent opportunity to join a small, established and friendly business where your contribution will genuinely be noticed.

Our client is a long-established, family-owned housebuilding business with a strong reputation for quality and craftsmanship. With a history stretching back many years, they have built an enviable reputation for creating high-quality homes and developments across the local area.

You’ll be joining a small, close-knit office team where everyone plays an important role in the running of the business. It’s a friendly and personable environment, and this is a role that will suit someone who enjoys being hands-on, taking responsibility and becoming a valued part of the team.

The Role

This is a varied bookkeeping position covering both the company’s day-to-day financial transactions and a range of wider finance administration.

You’ll take responsibility for the purchase and sales ledgers, credit control, reconciliations and payments, as well as supporting the Finance Director with reporting and ad hoc finance tasks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the purchase ledger, including processing and maintaining supplier invoices
  • Managing the sales ledger across both commercial and residential activities
  • Taking responsibility for credit control, following up outstanding payments and maintaining accurate records
  • Completing cash book and bank reconciliations
  • Preparing and inputting BACS, CHAPS and Faster Payments for the purchase ledger and other miscellaneous invoices
  • Producing monthly and annual costing figures
  • Administering utility bills, council tax and business rates across commercial and residential properties
  • Maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring transactions are processed promptly and correctly
  • Providing ad hoc support to the Finance Director across a range of finance tasks
  • Identifying and resolving discrepancies or queries as they arise
  • Contributing to the smooth running of the wider finance function in a small team environment

As you’d expect in a small business, this is not a role where you’ll be confined to one narrow area of accounts. You’ll need to be comfortable taking ownership, using your initiative and getting involved wherever your financial expertise is needed.

About You

We’re looking for an experienced and capable bookkeeper who enjoys having responsibility and being part of a small team.

You must be AAT qualified as a minimum and will ideally have:

  • Solid practical bookkeeping experience, ideally covering both purchase and sales ledgers
  • Experience of credit control and bank/cash reconciliations
  • Good working knowledge of spreadsheets and Excel
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
  • The ability to manage your own workload and meet deadlines
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to deal with suppliers, customers and colleagues
  • A practical, hands-on approach and the willingness to get involved
  • The ability to work comfortably in a small office where everyone has an important role to play

Experience within the housebuilding or wider construction industry would be an advantage, particularly if you have an understanding of the different types of costs and transactions involved. However, this is not essential.

Most importantly, you’ll be someone who takes pride in getting things right, enjoys having ownership of your work and will be happy working in a friendly, established business where a personal approach matters.

The Package

  • £50,000–£60,000 salary, depending on qualifications and experience
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am–4.00pm
  • 30-minute lunch break
  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
  • Free on-site parking
  • Kitchen with complimentary tea, coffee and soft drinks
  • Friendly, small-team working environment

The business is looking to appoint as soon as possible, with the intention of having a short handover period with the existing employee. The exact start date is still to be confirmed, but it is not expected to be before the end of September 2026.

Interested?

If you’re an AAT-qualified bookkeeper who enjoys a varied role, likes taking ownership and would relish the opportunity to become a key part of a small and established business, we’d love to hear from you.

We're really good at keeping our job board up to date, so if the link for this role works, we are still accepting applications and we'd love you to apply.
