Our Client
Our client is a growing accountancy practice, specializing in supporting tech focused start up and scale up businesses. As our client continues to support a growing number clients operations in the United States, they are creating a new senior leadership position: Head of US Accounting and Tax Services. This role is designed for an experienced accounting professional who can take full ownership from day one of all US-related financial services.
The Role
This is a strategically important role that combines technical expertise, service leadership and cross-border collaboration. The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping the firm’s US accounting capability, ensuring regulatory compliance, operational excellence and outstanding client experience.
As a senior member of the leadership team, they will be instrumental in defining and delivering our client’s approach to integrated UK/US support, bringing deep experience in US financial and compliance requirements while supporting innovation, growth and long-term value for their clients.
As the team grows, they will co-lead recruitment efforts, working alongside key team members to identify and onboard top talent, ensuring the firm continues to grow with the right expertise.
This is a unique opportunity to build and lead a practice area, starting from a solid foundation of demand. You’ll work closely with our UK-based colleagues and clients to ensure seamless integration of cross-border services, while continuously improving service delivery through technology and process innovation.
The key responsibilities of the Head of US Accounting and Tax Services are:
US Service Delivery Ownership
• Take full responsibility for the execution and quality of all US-facing services, including:
o US payroll (e.g. Gusto, Rippling, etc.).
o Federal and state corporate tax filings (particularly Delaware and other common start-up states).
o Sales tax registration and compliance across various states and industries.
o US year-end financial processes and reporting.
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients requiring US support.
• Collaborate with UK Client Managers to ensure accurate intercompany accounting, FX revaluations and alignment across jurisdictions.
• Monitor and implement regulatory changes across relevant states and industries.
Technology & Process Development
• Lead the evaluation and implementation of new US-compatible technologies that integrate with platforms like Xero.
• Own the trialling and rollout of tools, providing feedback and refining workflows before handing off to the wider team.
• Identify automation opportunities and build scalable processes to support future growth.
Client Relationship Management
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key US-focused clients.
• Support clients with onboarding to US services, including payroll and tax registrations.
• Work with UK Client Managers to provide joined-up global service, including proactive resolution of issues and regular touchpoints with US decision-makers.
Team Development and Leadership
• In the medium term, build out a dedicated US accounting team, including hiring, training and performance management.
• Establish SOPs, training modules and onboarding materials for US processes.
• Mentor and coach junior team members as the team grows, ensuring high standards from day one.
Strategic Input
• Support the CEO and leadership team in shaping our client’s global expansion strategy.
• Provide insights on US tax and compliance trends that could affect UK/US group structures.
• Contribute to our client’s brand presence in the US market, including speaking to prospects during the sales process and supporting business development.
Sales and Upselling Support
• Work closely with the business development team to identify and execute upselling opportunities, including data services and billing enhancements.
• Develop strategies to improve client value by positioning additional services that align with their needs.
• Provide support to Client Managers in recognising and pursuing expansion opportunities within their client portfolios.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a strong command of US compliance requirements (including Delaware-based entities), US payroll, sales tax and federal and state corporate filings. They will also be a hands-on operator and someone who is excited by the opportunity to trial new tools and processes, implement them with clients and build a high-performing team to support the US function.
The post-holder will be CPA qualified, or equivalent, and hold at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field. They will undertake, achieve and maintain the mandatory level of informal and formal training required to meet the company’s expectations in terms of service standards, client service, quality and performance.
They will be exceptionally strong when it comes to having empathy and dealing with people (clients and staff). They will be tenacious and will not rest until the root cause of any issue is understood and resolved. They will have a strong ability to identify and prioritise process changes needed, from radical changes to small but important tweaks. They will have proven experience of motivating the team around them to do a great job, through successful coaching, training and/or mentoring of their team members.
Experience working with US tech start-ups and familiarity with cloud-based accounting tools such as Xero is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will be confident owning and delivering operational responsibilities independently and bring a genuine passion for technology and innovation, including hands-on experience trialling new tools and designing scalable, tech- enabled workflows.
The post-holder should have the ability to work in a fast-paced ’start-up’ environment and be able to work well under pressure and meet all deadlines, particularly when balancing work and study commitments. They should have excellent IT skills (Excel, Word and Outlook) and be able to quickly learn and adapt to new software and processes. A high level of literacy and numeracy skills with a passion for detail and accuracy is essential, alongside a keen interest in the world of start-ups, finance and business.

This is a new and senior level hire for our client and they are keen to find the right candidate. They operate a remote business with a huge amount of flexibility and are open to speaking to candidates about the hours, pattern and salary that work for them (dependent on skills, experience and ability within the outlined role).
