The Role
As Clerk to the Governors, you will provide vital governance and administrative support to the Governing Body. You’ll ensure the effective operation of all board and committee meetings, maintain accurate records, and advise on governance, compliance and best practice.
This is a hands-on role requiring both precision and judgement — from preparing agendas and minutes, to advising the Chair and Principal on governance matters. You’ll be central to ensuring the board fulfils its legal and strategic responsibilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Organising and supporting all full board and committee meetings, including the preparation of agendas, papers, and accurate minutes.
- Advising the Chair and Governors on governance, compliance, and regulatory matters.
- Maintaining a calendar of meetings and ensuring timely publication of agendas and papers.
- Overseeing record-keeping, policies, and documentation in line with statutory and best practice requirements.
- Supporting the Chair of Governors and coordinating communication across the Governing Body.
- Managing updates to the Register of Interests, Governor attendance, and membership records.
About You
You’ll bring experience in a governance, board secretariat, or charity administration role, ideally within education or a not-for-profit environment. You’ll combine strong organisational skills and attention to detail with the confidence to guide senior stakeholders.
Key skills and experience include:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven experience supporting a board, committee, or trust.
- Sound knowledge of governance or charity board procedures.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Discretion, professionalism, and sound judgement.
Terms
- 14.25 hours per week (includes administrative time and attendance at meetings).
- Meetings include 10 committee sessions per year (evenings) and 4 full board meetings (one evening, three Saturdays per year).
- Hybrid working: typically one day per week on-site at the school (Overton House, Berkhamsted) plus home-based work and meeting attendance.
- £42,500 FTE* (£16,370 actual salary).
