Job Description

Are you an experienced HR specialist looking for a strategically important role in a growing SME?  If you are a Senior HR Advisor or Business Partner, comfortable managing all aspects of HR and looking for a part-time role, this would be the perfect next step.

Overview

Our client is a family owned, diverse renewable energy group with turnover of c. £10m. The group owns and operates a portfolio of nine hydroelectric power stations and two wind turbines, delivering a combined capacity of over 5MW. In addition to power generation, the business provides consultancy services to small renewable energy generators and offers repair and maintenance support to hydropower companies across the UK.

Recently, the group has expanded into solar energy through the acquisition of several solar assets and an installation business. With offices in Hertfordshire, Nottinghamshire, and Yorkshire, the company employs around 25 staff and has significant growth plans in the solar sector.

The Role

Due to continued expansion, we are seeking to appoint the company’s first in-house HR Manager. This newly created role reflects the business’s ongoing development and ambition, transitioning HR responsibilities from being outsourced or director-managed to an internal strategic function.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the HR function in a growing, values-driven business.

The successful candidate will lead the HR agenda across the group, with responsibility for employee support, recruitment, compliance, training, and health & safety. The role will begin with an audit of policies and practices across the group, followed by the deployment of consistent, best-practice HR policies and support structures which align with the company's values and business goals.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the directors in all HR functions, including staff welfare, performance management, training and development, as well as employee engagement, across the three office locations.
  • Oversee payroll for the group, including three employer companies, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
  • Oversee and develop the company’s HR systems, ensuring accurate record-keeping in line with GDPR and internal data security policies.
  • Regularly review and update HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with current legislation and alignment with best practice.
  • Manage all recruitment activity in conjunction with directors (including liaison with recruitment partners), staff on-boarding, induction and exit processes.
  • Act as a trusted adviser to senior leadership, contributing to strategic planning and supporting the delivery of company objectives.
  • Develop and manage remuneration, benefits, and reward strategies that align with company culture and employee expectations.
  • Coordinate all internal HR-related communications and ensure clear, consistent messaging.
  • Support directors in the management of health & safety policy and compliance, including risk assessments, staff training, and liaison with external H&S consultants and relevant authorities

The Candidate

  • Ideally, you'll be Associate CIPD qualified (or part qualified) or equivalent.
  • Strong HR experience in a senior HR advisor/business partner role or equivalent, ideally within a small business.
  • Previous experience of payroll processing would be preferred.
  • Excellent systems skills including HR software and all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrable emotional intelligence and an empathetic approach to supporting all staff.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels in the business.
  • Proven ability to communicate and present across all parts of the business and to key external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional organisation and administrative skills.
  • Proven ability to manage external relationships with key partners.
  • A proactive mindset with the ability to identify and deliver process improvements.
  • Experience working within a multi-site business and/or the renewable energy sector is an advantage.

The Terms

  • Salary £50k FTE*
  • 24 days annual leave plus bank holidays FTE
  • Auto enrolment pension
  • A heavily subsidised healthcare package provided by Paycare
  • *This is a part time role, currently offered at 12 to 15 hours per week, ideally over two or three days. With a head office in Rickmansworth, this role would require UK travel approximately once every 6 weeks. A hybrid arrangement can be discussed with the right candidate.
